Our Philosophy

At Paul the Tutor's Education Center, we are committed to helping students develop core cognitive skills such as problem solving and critical reasoning. Our approach is based on Paul's Logical Learning System™, a method that uses academics as a launching pad to teach students how to read, write, and reason better. We believe that better thinking leads to better grades and better test scores, and that the skills we teach will help students succeed in academics and beyond.

I’m an experienced and successful science and math teacher/tutor and former biotech researcher & business development manager. Currently I’m working as a substitute teacher in the east bay, teaching mostly math and science classes to middle and high school students at charter and private schools. Previously I was a full time middle and high school science and math teacher at a private school for learning challenged students, where all instruction was done on a one-to-one basis. I taught fully accredited courses in High School biology, Algebra 1 &2, and Geometry, as well as middle school math and general science. I’ve also had success working over the last three years for a number of private tutoring agencies where I tutored students to improve their scores on the SAT, ACT, CBEST and CSET exams and to improve their math, chemistry, genetics and biology grades. My class room teaching experience includes over six years as a teacher in the Oakland and Richmond school districts. My undergraduate education at U.C. Berkeley focused mainly on biology & environmental science, including key environmental issues and ecology. My master’s degree from Cal State Hayward (now East Bay) was in molecular and cell biology. I was a co-author of two publications related to my thesis project. After working as a bench molecular biologist for a couple of years, I moved into sales and business development, selling a variety of products, services, instruments and software to Ph.D. level medicinal chemists and biologists in the U.S. and Canada involved in drug discovery and drug development. I've decided to embark on a new career in teaching and tutoring. I believe that all students deserve a tutor, who is kind, patient and knowledgeable, who can relate to each students individual needs and challenge and encourage the student to achieve beyond their expectations of themselves. I believe each student should have a customized program based on their individual learning styles and aptitude to enable them to master the required subject material. I present material in a step-by-step manner and provide students with a logical framework for solving similar problems. I’ve had experience working with students with a range of learning differences and have devised strategies for teaching them. I strive to make my classes highly interactive and practical, to encourage the interest and participation of as many students as possible in math and the sciences. I’m interested in giving something back to the community to help inspire young science and math students to gain successful admission to quality universities.
